Accelerated Orthodontics in Central Pennsylvania

Accelerated Orthodontics

Straighten your teeth in 3 to 8 months!

Accelerated Orthodontics utilizes a combination of proven periodontal and orthodontic techniques to move teeth  approximately 4 times faster than possible with conventional orthodontics, which typically takes 18 to 36 months.

Dr. Greenberg uses the accelerated orthodontic system originally developed in 1998 by Dr. Thomas Wilcko, periodontist and Dr.  William Wilcko, orthodontist, after a decade of research. They coined the procedure “Wilckodontics.”

Who can take advantage of Accelerated Orthodontics?

Accelerated Orthodontics is an orthodontic alternative for any adult and any teen who has all their permanent teeth. In addition, this procedure can be used for patients who have not responded to conventional orthodontic treatment, such as patients with difficult crowding or who have been told they need to move their jaws with surgery.

How Accelerated Orthodontics  works

Accelerated orthodontics works by using the inherent potential of living bone to assist in tooth movement.  The full name of this technique is Periodontal Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics™ (PAOO™). “Osteogenic” means to do with the formation of bone.

It involves a quick, minimally invasive surgery on the bone surrounding your teeth and traditional metal braces. Your braces are placed before the periodontal procedure by one of Dr. Greenberg’s partner orthodontists. Because of the accelerated nature of the procedure, you will need to see the orthodontist every two to three weeks.

Preparing your bone

The bone around the teeth to be moved is stimulated to go into a healing cycle. Once in a healing cycle, the bone is softer and allows your braces to quickly move your teeth into their correct positions.

Dr. Greenberg uses his ultrasonic Piezosurgery Touch to make precise small vertical cuts in the ridge bone supporting your teeth. He adds bone graft material, which further helps to stimulate the bone to go into a healing mode and provides sufficient tooth support. Because the ultrasonic piezosurgery targets only the bone and not surrounding tissue, there is minimal trauma and healing is relatively fast. In fact, the bone often becomes stronger than it was before!

Preventing bone recession

A liability of conventional orthodontic treatment is the possible loss of bone around the teeth during the orthodontic process. Dr. Greenberg adds sufficient bone graft to ensure no bone is lost during accelerated orthodontics.
