Cleanings for Dental Implants
Expert Implant Cleanings with Dr. Greenberg
Just like natural teeth, dental implant-supported teeth need cleaning. They require special cleaning techniques which we teach our patients after their implant treatment has been completed.
Implant-supported teeth also require professional cleaning. Dr. Greenberg performs the cleanings himself to ensure your implants will have a long life span. One bonus about implant cleanings: there is no root or tooth sensitivity!
We recommend that a patient with dental implants gets at least two cleanings per year.
Gum Disease Treatment for Dental Implants
Patients with dental implants can still get gum disease around their implants, although the causes can be different. This type of gum disease is called “peri-implantitits.”
The symptoms are similar to regular gum disease and include:
- Gums bleeding upon brushing
- Change of gum color near the implant
- Gum sensitivity
- Swelling in the gum
Pain is often not a symptom, but as peri-implantitis progresses, there are further complications which can cause pain, as well as implants loosening, abundant bleeding while brushing, pus, receding gums and bone loss.
Causes of Peri-Implantitis
- Poor oral hygiene
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- Poor implant placement
- Thin gums
Treatment for Peri-Implantitis
Peri-implantitis can’t be treated with regular deep cleaning and requires more expert cleaning. Dr. Greenberg needs to raise the gum tissue by creating a flap with our laser, then strips away the infected tissue with the laser and cleans the implant surface with the laser or with chemical cleansers.
If any bone has been damaged or lost, he applies a bone graft to stimulate new bone growth, and uses biological growth factors to speed healing.
In extreme cases, Dr. Greenberg will have to replace the dental implant.
