Gum Recession Treatment in Central Pennsylvania

A revitalized smile and no sensitive roots

Recessed gums and exposed roots not only mar the aesthetics of a smile, these roots are frequently sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks. Gum grafting is a technique used to correct this issue.

Minimally Invasive Techniques

Traditionally, gum grafting for receding gums has involved painful extraction of tissue from the roof of the mouth. Dr. Greenberg uses microsurgical techniques to gently extract the needed tissue from a micro site. This means healing is faster and there is less post-operative pain.

What causes receding gums?

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding your teeth erodes or retracts. Gum recession is most commonly caused by:

  • Genetics
  • Teeth that are out of alignment
  • Teeth grinding
  • Trauma to the teeth
  • Overly aggressive brushing or flossing
  • Severe gum disease

The importance of treating recessed gums

Receding gums shouldn’t be ignored. If not treated, the tissues and bones that support your teeth can become so severely damaged that tooth loss occurs.

Treatment for thin gums

Gums that are very thin can’t adequately support teeth, and will eventually recede. Gum grafting can bolster thin gums and prevent recession that could ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Our procedure

Gum Recession Treatment

Dr. Greenberg explains the treatment fully during a consultation.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Greenberg will show you photos of previous patients that he has helped with gum grafting, and clearly explain the procedure. He will take reference photos, and use an intraoral camera that displays images of your mouth on a monitor so that you can see the areas that need to be treated.

Microsurgical treatment

Dr. Greenberg uses microsurgery, working with very small instruments and an illuminated microscope, to perform gum grafting treatment in the least invasive manner. Rather than taking a sizable square from the top of the palate, he minimizes discomfort by harvesting gum tissue from the side of the palate by the teeth where gum tissue is denser.

After creating a tiny incision, just 1 mm thick, he removes a slender length of tissue that he uses to repair receding gums and cover exposed roots. By using this method, fewer sutures are required and healing time is much faster.

You’ll be prescribed oral antibiotics as a precaution, and pain pills for post-treatment. Dr. Greenberg will see you every two weeks to ensure the graft is healing well, and won’t consider treatment complete until you are fully satisfied with the result.
